Performance and Rehearsal Facilities

Article Index

The West Lafayette Music Program is fortunate to have an outstanding collection of facilities at our disposal.  The Junior/Senior High School houses nearly 30,000 square feet of music department space, including a remarkable 16 practice rooms, 4 offices, and over 5,000 square feet of equipment storage.  These facilities are used by over half of the students at the Junior/Senior High School on a daily basis (506/999 students).  We are grateful to the West Lafayette Community School Corporation and the West Lafayette Athletic Department for their willingness to help our growing music program!

The West Lafayette Jr/Sr HS Band Room began as an auxiliary gym in the early 1970s, and has served as temporary classrooms and storage facilities during the school's many renovations.  The facility was converted to a band complex in 2005 in response to program growth and serious acoustic concerns in the previous facility.  The Band Room was officially opened on Friday, January 6, 2006.

The band area houses a 3000 S.F. rehearsal room with a full SMART SymPodium system and surround-sound audio, eight practice rooms, a library, office, percussion room, repair tables and tubs, and a large storage area.

Marshall Howenstein Auditorium

Howenstein Auditorium was completed in the mid-1990s, and provides the entire music department an acoustically and educationally appropriate facility for all performances.  In 2000, the 700-seat facility was named for legendary Band and Orchestra director Marshall Howenstein, who remains the longest-tenured music instructor in the history of West Lafayette High School.  Howenstein himself attended the dedication ceremony, and passed away soon after at the age of 100.  The auditorium hosts over 30 music department performances each school year, and also handles meetings, outside groups, and school convocations.  Howenstein Auditorium is connected to the Orchestra and Choir facility, and features two large dressing rooms and a large set construction area.

Orchestra / Choir Area

West Lafayette is fortunate to have separate facilities for each music discipline, a rarity at such a small school. Each room features a full audio/video setup with SMART podium capabilities.  The Orchestra / Choir Area provides two large rehearsal rooms, eight practice rooms, and a substantial amount of storage space.  The close proximity of this area to Howenstein Auditorium also opens that facility for convenient practice space.

Leslie Field

Leslie Field was the home of the Red Devil football team for 75 years before their move to the Salisbury Athletic Complex and Gordon Straley Field.  In 1942, WLHS named the field in honor of the late Indiana Governor Harry G. Leslie, who attended West Lafayette High School in the mid-1890s.  Leslie Field is now used for physical education classes and junior high football, and occasionally for marching band rehearsals.  The facility has a 24-foot press box platform and a good built-in sound system for games and rehearsals.

Bill Berberian Gymnasium

Bill Berberian Gymnasium was built in the early 1950s directly above the first true auditorium in the WLCSC, a revolutionary design at that time.  The gym was named in honor of long-time Boys Basketball coach Bill Berberian.  The gym received a makeover in 2006-07, with new bleachers, fresh paint, and new mats.  Berberian Gymnasium hosts all WLHS basketball games, as well as the annual Spring Band Festival.
